About Me

Barbara has been taking photographs in a professional way since the mid-nineties, working initially with slide film, dark room enlarging and chemical color processing techniques.

Her background in the natural sciences creates a focus not only for landscape photography in many different environments, but in close encounters with all kinds of life forms and ecological systems.  Light, shadow, spaces and patterns attract her attention and come togwether in these unique images.

Barbara is known for her local images taken in Southern Oregon, especially Ashland and Lithia Park with its' ever-changing beauty.  She enjoys traveling to areas throughout the state with her camera at the ready.  She particularly likes the recent abstract "water paintings"  that play with reflected fall colors on the water of the Rogue River.

Type of Artwork, Media, Subject Matter

My photographs are taken with a Nikon D200 SLR camera and printed on my 7-color Epson 2200 printer.  All images are prepared and mounted with archival materials.

Subjects range from local images taken in Ashland, Medford, other parts of Oregon and Northern California, to still life studies and abstractions of fluid color.  I enjoy an intense look at a particular subject. This may take the form of a Death Valley Series, or a historic farm and parlor in the Ohio Western Reserve which is part of my own family history.

About Me

I have always had a passion for art - and animals too! Even as a child, all of my drawings had animals in them. So, it was fitting that after a 20-year corporate career, I would go back to that. I started volunteering at our local animal shelter (acquiring a few more dogs in the process) and I got serious about oil painting! I painted all of our dogs, gave pet portraits as gifts and painted the occasional cow and rooster. Now I am completely focused on animal art - mainly painting pet portraits and shelter/rescue animals that inspire me - and I donate 10% of my sales back to the Jackson County Animal Shelter and Sanctuary One in Jacksonville, OR, two places where I also volunteer.

About Me

This award-winning artist originates from "Colorful Colorado". With nature playing a huge part in her childhood, it comes as no surprise to find the earth's beauty to be what compels Elaine Frenett to paint. After extensive travel, she returned to her dream - of becoming an artist. In 1991 Ms. Frenett graduated from San Jose State University with a BS in Graphic Design, focusing in Illustration. As an Illustrator, she has been published from New York to San Francisco. Eventually, Elaine's interest shifted to fine art, where she now finds more personal satisfaction and reward. Frenett's pieces are currently in collections private, corporate, museum and international. See more of her work at the Ashland Art Center where she also has her studio.

Her current passions include Visual Art Journaling and she leads workshops and retreats, locally & internationally, to spread her enthusiasm. Go to: http://visualartjournaling.wordpress.com/ to view more of her Visual Art Journal work.

About Me

“Art is a projection of our souls. A look at what’s happening on the inside. My work is a reflection of my relationship with myself. This journey never ends for me. However, at some point, it becomes my gift to the world...”

~ Emily Umbaugh

Born and raised in Indiana, Emily’s early childhood reflected her career as an artist. She was often times found holding her adored baby dolls in one arm, and using her other hand to draw their delicate little faces. This sort of innocence is still seen in her work today. Throughout her career in school, art was always something she excelled exceptionally well in. Winning awards and contests were common accomplishments for her. But small town life left her wanting more and the day after her high school graduation, she boarded a plane set for Los Angeles, CA. Throughout college there, she studied and worked as an interior designer before eventually turning that into a successful career as well. Today she resides in the sweet and simple hillsides of Ashland, OR where she invests in herself as a full time artist.

Emily’s work involves a mix of different mediums like graphite, oil, watercolor, acrylic, and resins applied in a series of layers. Each layer carries with it different colors and technique, qualities and emotions than the next. Just as the layers that make up who we are as individuals. Her work comes from a place of happiness and romance inside of her. Lust and desire. Pain and anguish. Innocence and play. Guilt and shame. All of the experiences that she or anyone has ever encountered, and the emotion that is felt within it, is where her next layer is created. Every piece created, is a journey she has taken within herself.

About Me

Artist's Statement

I feel that art feeds and nurtures our souls. For me, I love to paint! I feel within me a driving desire to express through painting, and I think that painting is a part of my purpose in life. I also learn and am stretched by painting, often digging deeper, or opening up more, to what is being created.

I never know what I’m going to paint when I sit down to paint. When I paint, I ask, with an open heart, for the highest good for all to come through. What comes through are mostly what I think of as depictions of love, light and joy.

I find the paintings inspiring, and I feel blessed by them, both in creating them and while they grace my walls, before they to go to a new home.  And I hope they are inspiring to others, and a visual reminder of those things that we cannot see, like love and joy, but that make such a difference in life.

While I have my own experience of the paintings, I believe that everyone else will experience them in their own way.  I love the feedback that I get from those who view, or purchase, a painting. They often see and experience things that I don’t.

Artist’s Bio

While I drew and painted horses when I was young, it was in college that I took art classes and rediscovered the feeling that I enjoyed art, painting in particular. What I ended up studying in college, however, and going into afterwards, was interior space planning and design.

I spent 19 years in that field, in Michigan, where I grew up. Eleven of those years were with my own consulting business, designing for businesses and institutions.

In the middle of my design career, however, when I saw some painting supplies in an art and office supply store, I thought to myself "Someday, I'm going to paint again."

After those 19 years in the design field, I left it and followed my spiritual path which took me to quite a variety of places and jobs, and which brought me back to painting. It was in 1998 that I started painting, part-time, doing about half a dozen paintings every year. Then in 2006, I moved from Iowa to Colorado and started painting full-time.

To begin with, I painted realistic landscapes as that’s what I thought I'd always do. But, shortly after I started painting again, when I was playing and dabbling around with using up the paint that was left over on my palette, I found that I thoroughly enjoyed painting abstractly. I then gradually switched to painting predominately abstract paintings.

I now live in Shady Cove, OR and painting continues to expand my life.

About Me

I grew up in the Willamette Valley in Oregon and art has been my passion starting as a young child growing up.  At WOU I studied to be an art teacher and developed my skills in watercolor and life drawing.  I have been a teacher for over thirty years, helping others develop their artistic skills, creativity and art direction.  Recently settled in Southern Oregon I have recently showed my watercolors at the Ashland Art Center and have also illustrated a book called Exultation by Jacqueline Sa, where you can find my illustrations at www.RootsLegends.com.

My contemporary abstract paintings are all oil paintings on canvas with mixed media. Most are painted with natural earth pigment paints that I collect in nature and grind into an eco oil paint (so these paintings won't off-gas like "normal" oil paintings). They are all inspired by nature and the flowing organic shapes and colors of the natural world.

I can also show my contemporary portraiture too. See website for samples.

About Me

All of my life I have been drawn to the beauty, detail and the subtleties to be found in Nature. I was fortunate to spend my early years in a sparsely populated part of rural Wales, which had an abundance of rolling woodlands and meadows where I spent many hours exploring.

I am continually drawn to the beauty and form of flowers as they exist in such profusion. I am drawn to the intricacies of each plant and its flowers, as well as  the details that reveal themselves the closer I look.

I purchased my first film camera in the mid 1950’s, experimented with color processing in the 1980’s, but only began to think seriously about photography when digital capture became a viable option.

My interest accelerated with a three-week workshop in Florence, Italy in 2009.

My current work is largely focused on close-up photography of flowers, but I am also challenged by landscape photography, as well as black and white and night time photography.

About Me

Beautiful landscapes of the Rogue Valley, Oregon & California coasts, and western mountain scenes are my passion to paint in oils and pastels.  A feeling of calm well-being comes over me as I paint them in the studio from my photos, or quite often "en plein air".  Impressionists, historical and current, are my heroes.

About Me

I am originally from Austin, Texas.  My husband and I settled in Ashland not long after we were married.  We are raising two beautiful kids here and love the small town community Ashland offers.   I spend my days painting at Second Floor Studios and teaching art.

Type of Artwork, Media, Subject Matter

I am a representational artist.  I paint almost exclusively in oils.  I love the richness oil offers, for me there is nothing else like it.  I try to paint from life as much as possible but out of necessity I will paint from photos too.  I enjoy painting the human figure, capturing special moments of life or an expression that intrigues me.  I also enjoy painting still lifes and  landscapes in plein air.

About Me

I have been fortunate to spend much of my career and recreation time exploring nature.  It is fascinating to examine all the details, above and below ground, up close and from a landscape perspective.  Every square inch of our natural world contains something artistically beautiful and scientifically interesting.  I like to pick out one aspect of the environment and hold it up for inspection, with all its imperfections and variation.  By changing perspective, focus, season and habitat, I have an infinite palette, and an unlimited source of inspiration.
